KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is taking steps to further enhance its international network by introducing a twinning programme in the field of Criminology and Criminal Justice with Mahidol University, Thailand.

UKM Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Ekhwan Toriman said the three-semester programme is expected to start in 2023.

He said the programme was unique because apart from bringing together students from several countries in Asia under one roof, the combined energy of lecturers from several different educational institutions also produced an interesting clash of academic cultures.

“This programme will be offered to all, including officers from enforcement agencies in Malaysia and Asian countries such as the Royal Thai Police and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board, Thailand.

“This is followed by several other academic programmes that will be implemented in a hybrid manner with Mahidol University and also several other universities in Thailand," he said in a statement today.

Mohd Ekhwan said that in addition to sharing experience and expertise, the synergy was able to provide a different perspective to existing learning methods.

He said UKM also has a Centre for Shaping Advanced and Professional Education (UKMShape) which provides learning and training opportunities for all levels of society.

"UKMShape offers academic and professional programmes that are competitive and meet current needs," he said.

He said that so far, UKMShape has successfully implemented 15 academic and non-academic study programmes (which are in development and already running), as a result of cooperation with seven countries, namely China, Indonesia, Kuwait, Thailand, Qatar, Syria and Germany.

"UKM is determined to continue to preserve the internationalisation agenda through various long-term initiatives that are being implemented in stages," he said.
