KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 (Bernama) -- The new Selayang Wet Market Complex here is a government’s initiative in improving the comfort and well-being of city dwellers including the disabled (OKU) with a cleaner, more modern and comfortable environment.
Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim said the four-storey modern market, which can accommodate 673 stalls, is equipped with various facilities such as lifts, escalators, food courts, multi-storey parking, loading bay and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras as well as a more organised layout.
"The market also provides an ice processing room for traders selling seafood as well as two freezer rooms to enable storage of raw goods.
"In addition, there are 641 car park lots and 269 motorcycle parking spaces inside the market complex, which is also equipped with nine CCTV units outside the building and 30 CCTV units inside the building. With this security feature, all parties will feel safer and more secure," he said when officiating the new market and the Jalan Ipoh flyover to PHSKL today.
Construction on the RM90 million project started on May 11, 2018 and was completed on Nov 5, 2020 while operation began on June 1, 2021.
Shahidan said in response to the government's call towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the market is also equipped with a solar photovoltaic (PV) system for the purpose of reducing the use of electricity.
"Besides that, a rainwater harvesting system is also incorporated into the building and rainwater is reused by DBKL (Kuala Lumpur City Hall) for maintenance and watering of plants around the market," he said.
He said a flyover connecting Jalan Ipoh to PHSKL was also completed in March, to ease traffic congestion in the surrounding area.
