Speed limit of 25 km/h being considered for use of micro-mobility vehicles

KATOWICE (POLAND), June 28 (Bernama) -- A speed limit of 25 kilometres per hour (km/h) is being considered as one of the guidelines on the use of micro-mobility vehicles in Malaysia.

Director-General of the Town and Country Planning Department (PLANMalaysia) Alias ​​Rameli said  PLANMalaysia was in the final phase of finalising guidelines on the use of micro-mobility vehicles.

He said among the elements being studied in the guidelines were the speed limit of micro-mobility vehicles, road marking and specific routes.

"The speed limit of micro-mobility vehicles may not exceed 25 km/h, though the vehicle can reach a speed of 50 km/h," he said when met by Bernama at the 11th World Urban Forum (WUF11) here.

He said the guidelines, when completed, would be tabled to the Transport Ministry and the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) for approval and announcement.

“The guidelines are being finalised. We are adapting the use of micro-mobility to suit with the existing laws  under local government authorities and the Road Transport Department,” he said.

Alias ​​said the use of micro-mobility vehicles was generally beneficial to the country as it was able to reduce carbon consumption in the city.

"The trend in the use of micro-mobility actually needs to be adjusted for the safety of other road users," he added.

On June 13, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the ministry would provide guidelines on the use of micro-mobility vehicles in the country.
