KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob extended his condolences to the family of national football legend Syed Ahmad Syed Abu Bakar who breathed his last at the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital in Kangar, Perlis, at about 1 pm today.
Describing Syed Ahamd as a 'gem' in the world of national football, Ismail Sabri said his services would always be remembered by all Malaysians.
“He made Malaysia proud when he scored a goal in the Olympic Games qualifiers in Seoul, South Korea in 1971, enabling Malaysia to qualify for the Olympics in Munich, Germany in 1972.
“May his soul be placed among the pious and the believers. Al-Fatihah, ” he said in a post on his official Facebook account today.
Syed Ahmad died at the age of 76 due to a heart attack. His son, Syed Abu Bakar, 40, was reported to have said that his father was admitted to the hospital two days ago and that the latter’s health had deteriorated over the past month.
Syed Ahmad leaves behind his wife, Samihah Ghazali, 75, and five children.
