KUALA PERLIS, May 12 (Bernama) -- The Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail Mosque here has been chosen as the pilot project for the Green Houses of Worship programme in Perlis.
State Islamic Religious Affairs, Welfare and Disaster Relief Committee chairman Ruzaini Rais said the mosque was chosen because of its strategic location and role as a tourist attraction.
“This pilot project is an initial step to introduce green technology to the public, especially mosque kariah, besides attracting young people to be involved in preserving the environment," he told reporters after launching the state mosque-level Environmental Sustainability Awareness Carnival here today.
Also present was Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTS) chief executive officer Ts Shamsul Bahar Mohd Nor.
Ruzaini, who is also the Berseri assemblyman, said the state government viewed the matter positively and it would be developed in stages to several other mosques in the state.
Meanwhile, Shamsul Bahar said to date, almost 15 mosques nationwide had started discussions for the use of green technology and it was expected that this year another 100 mosques would join in this effort.
"The programme was introduced to provide guidance and support to mosques and suraus on green technology to help them achieve savings in utility bills," he said.
He said MGTS and Yayasan Wakaf Malaysia (YWM) also provided a special funding through the Green Mosque Endowment Fund to help fund the development of this technology system at the mosque level.
"At the initial stage, we target RM1 million a year to be collected through this fund and every year 100 mosques will be selected to receive funds for green technology development," he said.
