ALOR GAJAH, April 27 (Bernama) -- A total of 640 oil lamps were used to decorate 16 panjut (structures made of bamboo) at a decoration competition held in conjunction with the Malam Tujuh Likur programme organised by the College of Creative Arts, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Melaka.
Project leader who is also a lecturer in industrial design, Ahmad Faiz Anuar, said the programme was part of the initiatives to enliven the atmosphere of Ramadan and celebrate the traditions of the Malay community ahead of Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
“After a two-year hiatus, we continue to organise this annual programme to give the students the opportunity to experience this tradition.
“It is hoped that this programme can challenge the students’ creativity and innovation skills to display various designs of panjut with the traditional Malay house concept, and at the same time strengthen their friendship and unity,” he told Bernama here.
A student, Muhammad Haikal Ikhtiaruddin Mohd Mazlishama, 19, from Johor, said it was a new and fun experience for him as he gets to learn how to install and decorate the panjut.
During the programme, 25 students from the underprivileged group received zakat assistance from the university which was presented by UiTM Melaka deputy rector of student affairs, Datuk Dr Mohd Nor Hajar Hasrol Jono, with the College of Creative Arts head Dr Nadzri Mohd Sharif also present.
