KUALA LUMPUR, March 30 (Bernama) - The success of Ikramatic Systems Sdn Bhd in beating foreign bidders in an open tender to develop a small arms firing simulator for the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) is a clear signal of Malaysia's capabilities in defence technology.

The simulator named Integrated Shooting and Markmanship Trainer (ISMAT) is designed to be 90 per cent similar to the real situation at the shooting range.

Ikramatic Systems Sdn Bhd managing director Syed Mohamad Jamil Syed Ahmad said the simulator was currently in the final phase of construction and would be stationed at the Syed Sirajuddin Army Camp in Gemas, Johor, with completion expected next year.

"The ability of Malaysians to develop simulator technology proves that dependence on foreign technology in this field is no longer needed and it is proof that we are not far behind developed countries," he told Bernama.

He was met at the Ikramatic Systems Sdn Bhd booth at the Asian Defence Services Exhibition (DSA) and Asia Security Exhibition (NATSEC) 2022 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) here, where the simulator was also on display.

Having started in 1998, Ikramatic's previous focus was to develop a flight simulator system for the use of the Royal Malaysian Air Force and over the past four years the company began expanding its capabilities into the shooting simulator arena with two main products, namely ISMAT and VR (Virtual Reality) Simulator.

According to Syed Mohamad Jamil ,the success of Ikramatic, based in Glenmarie, Selangor, in beating foreign companies, even from the United States and South Korea, in the RM30 million tender was driven by two factors, namely the use of the latest technology specifications and more competitive pricing.

He said ISMAT was developed over a period of two years and was based on real weapons without ammunition that were modified, accompanied by several sensors capable of detecting and analysing mistakes made during shooting such as how to hold the weapon or inaccurate firing angles.

"ISMAT can detect shooters' mistakes in using weapons and can be used as a guide for shooters to correct mistakes. In addition, ISMAT is easier to set up than an actual shooting range and is housed in a closed building. So this logistical aspect gives it an advantage," he said.

Syed Mohamad Jamil, who is also the chief designer of ISMAT and aims to attract new clients at the exhibition, also assured that immediate response would be given if there were any issues faced by clients.

He added that ISMAT is designed with the latest technology and is expected to have a lifespan of at least 15 years before requiring a mid-life upgrade.
