SEPANG, Jan 25 -- Eight civil servants who completed a 24-hour non-stop cycling involving a distance of 726.13 kilometres at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) today have been recognised as the Longest Non-Stop Cycling by a Group in the Malaysia Book of Records.
They are members of the Malaysian Government Servants Welfare and Sports Council (Maksak) cycling team and led by Youth and Sports Ministry’s Management and Support Services Division director Dr Norhasmat Abdul Aziz.
Others are six policemen, namely ASP Mohd Faizal Amir, Cpl Nik Mohd Azwan Zulkifle, Cpl/S Muhammad Fauzan Ahmad Lutfi, L/Cpl/S Muhammad Elmi Jumari, Const/S Muhammad Ameen Ahmad Kamal and Const/S Muhammad Ameer Ahmad Kamal, as well as a Kuala Lumpur City Hall staff, Muhammad Azran Ridzwan.
They started cycling at 7 am yesterday and finished at 8 am this morning, completing 131 non-stop laps at the SIC.
Commenting on the success, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali said it should be emulated by 1.6 million civil servants in the country, by making sports activities as a way of life to improve fitness and health.
“The government is very proud of the dedication of all these Maksak Cycling athletes," he told reporters after presenting certificates to the participants.
Meanwhile, Norhasmat said they have been training since October.
"A week before this programme, we cycled from Putrajaya to Desaru, Johor and Johor to Melaka to test our stamina," he said.
