10/01/2022 09:25 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 10 -- It was a sad moment as a mother walked up the stage to receive her late daughter’s Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) convocation ceremony today.

Norliza Abdullah, 50, who arrived from Sungai Petani, Kedah last night, said the posthumous degree was a testament to the hard work and strong spirit of her daughter Nuraida Sabrina Shamsul, 24, who died in June 2020 due to pneumonia.

“Along (Nuraida) was my first child and the backbone of the family after her father’s death in 2019.

“She took over the responsibility to take care of her siblings and look after my late husband’s business while undergoing an internship at the Murtadha Dakwah Centre in Sungai Petani,” she said when met at the 44th UPM Convocation Ceremony here.

Norliza said her late daughter did not complain of any pain prior to the incident.

“However, on the night of the incident, she suddenly was unable to move and breathed her last the following day,” she said.

At the third session of the convocation ceremony, UPM pro-chancellor Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Muhamad Zohadie Bardaei presented scrolls to 951 graduates.

Meanwhile, UPM chancellor, the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah will promulgate the appointment of the Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Muhamad Zohadie who is also former UPM vice-chancellor, and Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Syed Jalaludin Syed Salim as the university’s pro-chancellors for a period of three years from Oct 18, 2021, to Oct 17, 2024.

UPM Corporate Communications and Management Section head Mohammad Nazry Hisham, in a media statement said the ceremony would be held this Wednesday (Jan 12).

“Tengku Amir Shah will also present degree scrolls to graduates on Thursday (Jan 13),” he said.
