KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 18 -- Coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is now more important than ever for Malaysians to be conscious about adopting a healthier lifestyle through exercise and a balanced diet.
Universiti Malaya senior lecturer and Centre for Sport and Exercise Sciences research deputy director, Dr Sareena Hanim Hamzah, said this is especially important due to the emergence of new variants.
“In practising a well-balanced lifestyle, we should continuously observe our diet habits to ensure sufficient energy and nutrients for the body, and to avoid overeating.
“In order to remain active, it is also advisable to do at least 150 - 300 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic exercise throughout the week for substantial health benefits as this will also help pump up your endorphins and reduce stress,” she said in a webinar titled 'Start Your Day Right With A Nutritious Drink' by Amway Malaysia.
"A healthy and balanced diet should include protein in daily meals, besides carbohydrate and other nutrients.
“Protein shakes can work as a complement to other dietary elements.
“Constant exercise coupled with healthy consumption habits can lead to a balanced lifestyle," she said.
Agreeing with her, webinar panellist and dietitian, Indra Balaratnam said that a healthy diet is important for the immune system.
She said a diet rich in nutrition can reduce the likelihood of developing health issues such as obesity, heart disease or diabetes, while protein is one of the nutrients vital for human health.
"Protein is a macronutrient and is broken down into amino acids. It is important for growth, maintenance of body tissue and metabolic regulation which helps in maintaining a healthy weight, curbing hunger and speeding muscle recovery. You can find natural protein goodness from meat, fish, egg, tofu, beans and dairy.
"Protein is one of the nutrients that play a role in increasing (the production of) neurotransmitters which communicate with our brain to make us feel awake and alert. Thus including protein-rich choices as part of our healthy, balanced breakfast can help us feel energised and more nourished," she said.
