15/12/2021 07:52 PM

BANGI, Dec 15  -- The Green Mosque Endowment, an initiative of the Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA) to support the Green House of Worship (RIH) programme, has collected funds totalling RM35,050 from the public since its pre-launch on Oct 18 last year.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, said the Green Mosque Endowment, which is managed by the Malaysian Waqaf Foundation, collected contributions from individuals, the government and corporate sectors and non-governmental organisations (NGO) to be channelled to mosques.

“This endowment will benefit over 6,000 mosques and 18,000 surau in the country,” he said in his speech delivered by his deputy Datuk Mansor Othman at the launching of the Green Mosque Endowment and the Solar Photovoltaic System (PV) at the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (MGTC) here today.

MGTC, set up in 1995, is a government agency which was mandated to lead the country in the field of green growth, climate change mitigation and popularising a green way of life.

Tuan Ibrahim said RIH, which is a cooperation between KASA and MGTC, was created to turn houses of worship as catalysts of environmental sustainability in fostering a green living culture among the local communities.

The four main elements of the RIH programme are electricity saving, water saving, systematic waste management and the use of green products.

He said the Al-Hasanah Mosque, Bandar Baru Bangi had recorded several successes via pilot projects under the RIH programme, namely creating an energy monitoring system and a first phase solar system, tube well system, waste material collection centre and urban farm (UrbanKit).

At the same event, RHB Islamic Bank Bhd managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Adissadikin Ali handed over a contribution of RM75,000 for the purpose of installing the Solar PV System at the Al-Hasanah Mosque.

Tuan Ibrahim said 12 mosques in eight states including Selangor, Penang, Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu had been picked for adoption by MGTC.
