Lawas residents can now enjoy unlimited internet access with speeds of 30 Mbps

KUCHING, Oct 30  -- Residents in Lawas, Limbang can now enjoy unlimited internet access with speeds of 30 Mbps after the Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (MySRBN) upgraded the communications network in the area.

The Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) said in a statement today that for the long term, 25 towers would be installed in Lawas under the Sarawak Multimedia Authority Linking Urban, Rural and Nation (SALURAN) initiative to increase coverage by 72.4 per cent to 92.1 per cent of populated areas by the end of 2022.

“Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg is expected to launch the SALURAN-MySRBN initiative in Kampung Tengah, Trusan in Lawas tomorrow,” the statement read.

The initiative is carried out by SMA, Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to improve the communications network in rural and suburban areas in the state.

SMA said the initiative aimed to expand communication coverage in rural and suburban areas so that Sarawakians could have better coverage and participate in the digital economy.

The Sarawak government’s main focus under the Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy 2018-2022 is to boost internet accessibility and reduce the digital divide between rural and urban areas in the state.

“The inclusive policy will also provide a wider coverage of internet access and aims to make Sarawak a high-income economy by 2030,” it said.

In addition, 300 towers will be completed in the first quarter of next year and 300 more towers will be completed by the end of 2022 in Sarawak. Also 636 towers will be accredited early next year under the National Digital Network (JENDELA) initiative implemented by MCMC.
