SIBU, Oct 20 – It is a sad day for Bernama today when its senior journalist, Minggu Simon Lhasa, 53, passed away at Sibu Hospital today after a long illness.
Minggu breathed his last with his father by his bedside at about 3.10 pm, said his youngest sister, Daisy when contacted, here, today.
“His remains will be brought back to my sister’s house at Pearl Avenue in Sibu Jaya tomorrow morning and he will be laid to rest at Sibu Nirvana Memorial Park at about 9 am this Saturday,” she said.
Minggu, who was single, leaves behind his father Simon Lhasa Briak, 76; elder brother Edward Anchar, 55; younger brother Chard, 51; and sisters Anna, 46; Doris, 41; Dora, 39, and Daisy, 36.
Their mother Lina Mit passed away in 2003.
Minggu, who was a happy-go-lucky kind of person, was appointed as Grade S5 reporter at the Economics Desk on Jan 1, 1995 before he was promoted to Grade S4 on Oct 1, 1999.
He was promoted to Grade S3 reporter on Sept 1, 2002 before being promoted to Grade S44 news officer on Sept 1, 2007 and to Grade S48 news officer on July 1, 2010.
On June 15, 2013, he was appointed as the news agency’s Grade 52 foreign correspondent in Thailand.
After three years, Minggu returned to Malaysia and was appointed as assignment editor at the Economic News Desk on Jan 1, 2016 before he was on loan to BERNAMA TV on Nov 1, 2017 as assignment editor until his passing.
He will be remembered by his juniors as one of the good bosses who treated them like siblings.
