KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 -- Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is encouraging its employees to use public transportation in an effort to help reduce the use of vehicles in the federal capital.
Kuala Lumpur mayor, Datuk Seri Mahadi Che Ngah said the approach was taken to support the effort towards creating a low-carbon city.
“This can make the air here cleaner and the people feeling more comfortable and safer, besides helping to improve the health level.
“For starters, we gave away the My30 travel card for public transport services provided by Prasarana Malaysia Berhad early this month.
“We are also studying to ban our employees from driving to work every Friday to encourage a low-carbon lifestyle.
“The action is to minimise the release of carbon from the usage of vehicles in the city centre in line with Kuala Lumpur’s Sustainble Development Goals.”
He said this to reporters after the opening of the Kuala Lumpur Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Centre here, today, by Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim with his deputy Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias also present. The centre is located in Jalan Raja.
Mahadi said DBKL also planned to develop solar farms at several lakes in the federal capital to replace fossil fuel usage.
“We hope all these efforts can create a surrounding that is sustainable for the community and environment in keeping with the SDG,” he said.
The SDG Centre is an interactive base which combines all the initiatives and commitments for the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals by Kuala Lumpur.
“It functions to provide a general exposure and to boost the capability of the city folk and stakeholders with regard to the SDG, simultaneously seeking inclusive and effective solutions to subsequently bring changes for a better quality of life.
“The centre will empower Kuala Lumpur as the capital of Malaysia in sharing and collaborating at the local and international levels,” said Mahadi.
