JOHOR BAHRU, Sept 2 -- Three flood relief centres have been opened in Johor to house evacuees of flash floods that occurred following heavy rain in the state since this morning.
Johor Civil Defence Force assistant commissioner (PA) Kamal Mokhtar said the centres are at Dewan Raya Kampung Melayu Batu 10 and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Skudai here and Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Melayu Raya in Pontian.
"As of 4 pm, 19 residents from five families from Kampung Paya Embun have been housed at SK Melayu Raya which opened at 11 am.
"Over six hours of heavy rain has caused several houses in the village to be flooded,” he said when contacted by Bernama here today.
On the two centres in the city, he said both began operations at 10 am, but they were still collecting information about the number of affected victims and villages.
Kamal, who is also Johor state disaster management committee secretariat chief, said the centre at Dewan Raya Kampung Melayu Batu 10 was housing COVID-19 close contact evacuees, while the centre at SMK Skudai were for unaffected individuals.
"We had to open two centres in the city as they needed to be separated,” he said, adding that they were still waiting for a report from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage regarding the cause behind the flash flood in the city.
According to him, there was light rain in several areas in the state currently, but the flash floods has yet to force main roads to be closed.
