PETALING JAYA, April 6 -- Former army officer Colonel (Rtd) Mohd Nor Azam Ariffin has been appointed as the country's Chef-de-Mission (CDM) for the 2021 ASEAN Para Games (APG) in Hanoi, Vietnam in December.
Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) president Datuk Seri Megat D. Shahriman Zaharudin when making the announcement said the decision was in recognition of Mohd Nor Azam’s services for the country as a soldier for 36 years and over 25 years of involvement in parasports.
“He is the right candidate for us, given his efforts in the development of the parasports movement in our country, to guide our athletes towards success in Hanoi,” he told reporters after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ReGen Rehabilitation International Sdn Bhd at the ReGen Rehab Hospital here, today.
The 62-year-old is no stranger to the Malaysian para-sports movement, having served in various roles, including as a former para-badminton national player, former PCM Executive Council Member, former Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Para-Badminton Committee Member and former ASEAN Para Sports Federation Secretary-General.
Meanwhile, commenting on the vaccination programme, Megat Shahriman said the national para-athletes and officials are scheduled to receive their first dose on April 13 at the National Sports Institute (NSI) and Cheras Health Clinic.
Mohd Nor Azam, who was also present during the event, described his new role as a CDM as a big challenge, especially when he has to lead the national contingent to another country during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He pledged to work towards achieving commendable results with the help and support from PCM, National Sports Council (NSC) and NSI.
“There will only be 11 sports this time compared to 16 in Kuala Lumpur 2017 games. We came in second and third in the previous two editions, and this year we will do better to achieve the targets that have been set,” he said.
Through the MoU, ReGen Rehab is set to serve PCM as a rehabilitation partner to extend healthcare and clinical services to para-sports athletes, which includes research and development activities related to sports injuries.
