KUALA LUMPUR, April 5 -- The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) will implement a pioneer project involving the use of retort food packaging technology soon with the purchase of two machines so far.
Its minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said both machines, worth RM70,000 each, would be placed at Hotel Seri Malaysia in Perlis and Hotel Primula in Terengganu this year before the technology is extended to the hotel and catering industry players throughout the country.
“We urge more hotels to use this technology because we know hotels have a lot of food that can be saved via retort so that we can benefit from it.
“… in this way, we can help those in need and avoid wasting food that can be used,” he said after launching the Universiti Kuala Lumpur British Malaysian Institute (UniKL BMI) undergraduates food bank programme today.
The retort technology pioneer project was introduced under the Malaysia Food Bank programme in 2018 before being expanded through the undergraduates food bank programme in February 2019.
Retort packaging is a method of food packaging invented with aseptic processing made from various flexible laminated layers.
The technology allows for the sterilisation of various food and drinks to increase the shelf life of untouched food from the hotel and catering industry.
UniKL BMI is the first private institution of higher learning involved in the programme and the 26th university overall since it was introduced.
