Strong quake strikes Kermadec Islands, New Zealand

KUALA LUMPUR, April 1 -- A strong earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale hit the Kermadec Islands in New Zealand at 5.56 pm today.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), in a statement, today said the quake’s epicentre was at 1,048 km northeast of the North Shore, New Zealand at a depth of 50 km.

Meanwhile, MetMalaysia also reported that a moderate earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale had struck the Talaud Islands, Indonesia at 6.12 pm today.

It said the quake was detected at 58 km southeast of Talaud Island at a depth of 75 km.

Both incidents posed no tsunami threat to Malaysia.
