GEORGE TOWN, March 5 -- A total of 464 city council enforcement officers in Penang have received their first jab of the vaccine in Phase 1 of the National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme.
State Housing, Local Government and Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo today said that of the total, 249 are from the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) and the remaining 215 are from the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).
“The Penang government urges all Malaysians to register for the vaccination programme as soon as possible so that we can win the battle against COVID-19,” he said in a press conference, adding that he himself has already taken his vaccine shot at Jalan Angsana Health Clinic in Ayer Itam, here.
On March 2, Jagdeep had urged the federal government to give local government staff the eligibility to be vaccinated under Phase 1 of the National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme.
He argued that the enforcement officers have been on the ground to check on premises to ensure that the standard operating procedures (SOP) are strictly followed.
On March 3, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, in a statement, said that the issue has been raised in the National Security Council meeting, and it was unanimously agreed by the committee to give priority for city council enforcement officers to be vaccinated under Phase 1.
