MELAKA, Feb 11 -- The Melaka government is targeting the involvement of about 2,000 hawkers and small traders from all over the state in the Melaka Free Business programme in the first quarter of this year.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali said the initiative was to help hawkers and small traders as well as the people to generate income during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
He said the state government also announced the Bantuan Kasih Niaga fund amounting to RM1 million as an incentive for the people of Melaka to venture into business.
"We welcome any Melaka people, especially those who lost their jobs and had their salaries cut, to open small stalls or businesses in any suitable area, starting Jan 1 until Dec 31.
"However, they must apply for a business licence first from the local authority (PBT) in their respective areas and comply with the hygiene, health and safety rules as well as the standard operating procedures (SOP) set," he told reporters after handing over licences to 14 hawkers and small traders here today.
