KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 2 -- The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) has developed a detection technology using the Light Detection and Ranging Technology (LiDAR) to reduce the risk of collisions between motorcyclists and other vehicles.
LiDAR is a remote sensing method used for measuring the distance of an object on the earth’s surface.
MIROS Director-General Dr Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim said the technology is capable of detecting the vehicles in front and warn riders to avoid collisions even at a high speed.
“The collision warning is given through three stages and emphasises the ability to keep riders aware of impending danger in a timely manner.
“The main design principles are high impact, low cost, user-based, and easily installed through upgraded design (retrofit design),” he said in a statement today.
LIDAR-based technology is a key component of the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) whose role is to prevent deaths and injuries by reducing the number of car accidents and have been widely used in the design of vehicles with four wheels.
Khairil Anwar said the design approach would increase its marketability and availability to be widely used by motorcyclists in Malaysia in the near future.
