21/01/2021 08:22 PM

SEMPORNA, Jan 21 -- An attempt to smuggle cooking oil and petrol out to a neighbouring country failed when a Marine Police team carried out a raid off the waters of Kampung Kuala Bibang near here yesterday.

Sabah region 4 Marine Police commander ACP Ahmad Ariffin said in a statement today that the team came across two suspects at around 11.30 pm. They were moving the items into two speedboats, but fled when they realised the presence of the marine police.

“Inspections of the first speedboat revealed 23 jerry cans filled with petrol (575 litres) and 48 boxes filled with 816 packets of cooking oil, while the second boat had 20 jerry cans of petrol (500 litres),” he said.

Ahmad said the total value of the seizure, including the engines and boats was RM54,018 and the case would be handed over to the Semporna office of the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry for further action.

He also asked the cooperation of all parties, including the coastal communities to report any illegal activities to the Sabah Marine Communications Centre at 0132831197.
