KUCHING, Dec 23 -- Two category E fire and rescue stations have been proposed for construction in the Puncak Borneo parliamentary constituency, said its MP Willie Mongin today.
The Plantation Industries and Commodities Deputy Minister, said the Fire and Rescue Department and the Land and Survey Department together with him are identifying suitable sites for the construction of the fire stations.
"The construction of the two fire stations needs to be done as the area is far from any fire stations," he told reporters after launching the Fire Safety Awareness Programme in conjunction with Christmas Day 2020 celebrations and appreciation to the frontliners at the Siburan Fire and Rescue Station, 19 km from here today.
Meanwhile, he requested that the Fire and Rescue Department further expand the Sedia Urus Risiko Isi Rumah (Celik Suri) programme to all villages in the constituency.
He said the programme is important as it educates housewives on fire prevention measures and what to do in a fire.
Willie said he was committed to supporting the Celik Suri programme which aims to increase the level of fire prevention awareness among housewives in his constituency, including providing allocations for the purpose.
According to him this year, he has distributed 1,000 units of fire extinguishers to villages in his constituency and will continue with the initiative next year.
In the meantime, he urged the community to appreciate the sacrifice of officers and firefighters because their job is not only to extinguish fires but also in rescue work during natural disasters and as frontline personnel during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Also present at the event was Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department director Khirudin Drahman.
