Rise in registrations sign of greater awareness of intellectual property - MyIPO Chairman

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 16  -- The yearly increase in applications to register products with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) shows that Malaysians are becoming more aware of the importance of securing exclusive rights to their intellectual property.

MyIPO chairman Datuk Mohamad Alamin said the corporation received over 56,000 applications to register a product in 2019 compared to 52,000 the year before (2018).

"This is a very positive development for our country’s intellectual property because Malaysians are more aware of how important it is for them to register their designs,” he said when appearing on Bernama TV’s Ruang Bicara programme entitled ‘Harta Intelek Tempatan Ke Persada Dunia’ (Local Intellectual Property Onto The World Stage) tonight.

At the same time, he said efforts to register products with MyIPO indicated that applicants wished to ensure the quality of the country’s intellectual property would be preserved and their creations would be trusted by the public.

"If we have exclusive rights towards a certain product, a design, that means we can develop our innovation, we can commercialise our products anywhere, not only domestically but also at the international level,” he said.

Meanwhile, he advised the public, especially entrepreneurs to register their products or designs with MyIPO to ensure their creations were not used by other parties for their own gain.
