DUNGUN, Nov 27 -- The floods that hit Kampung Shukor in Hulu Dungun may have caused untold damage but it failed to deter three Form Five students from continuing their revision for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination next February.
While Tengku Sarfika Tengku Mohd Madzar and Tengku Noorliasafika Tengku Mohd Azhar are at the temporary relief centre (PPS) at the Kampung Shukor Community Hall, Tuan Syarieq Amsyar Tuan Mohd Shaimi has sought temporary shelter at his grandfather’s house nearby. All three students are 17 years old.
Tengku Sarfika, when met by Bernama at the centre, said the teachers of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kuala Jengal have been very understanding about the difficulties faced by the SPM students due to the poor Internet coverage in the village.
“To make matters worse, I was forced to move to the PPS after my house was inundated early this morning. Thankfully I managed to complete Thursday's homework earlier.
“I had moved all my books and laptop to higher ground earlier because I had learned my lesson from 2014, when the laptop provided by the school was submerged in floodwaters,” she said, adding that she wished to further her studies at the National Youth Skills Institute (IKBN) after the SPM.
Tengku Noorliasafika, meanwhile, admitted that she could not fully focus on her studies due to the flood as she needed to help her family to pack essential items to be taken to the PPS.
“It’s also difficult to study at the relief centre because it’s quite noisy, so I just use my mobile phone to revise with Tengku Sarfika,” said Tengku Noorliasafika, who obtained 3As in her recent SPM trial examinations.
Meanwhile, Tuan Syarieq Amsyar said his school had provided notes and revision materials on the last day of school to be used throughout the learning process at home.
“Sometimes the Internet is fast, sometimes slow but the teachers understand our difficulties in the village, so we can submit our homework a little later than others.
“Normally, we will download our assignments when there is coverage and send our completed work via WhatsApp,” he said.
