Sultan Nazrin grants early release to two prisoners

IPOH, Nov 5 -- Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah has consented to the early release of two prisoners in conjunction with his 64th birthday celebration tomorrow.

Perak Pardons Board secretary Datuk Ahmad Suaidi Abdul Rahim said the two prisoners whose release dates were on May 18, 2022 and June 24, 2023 respectively, were granted early release effective Nov 6.

He said ahead of the ruler’s birthday celebration, Sultan Nazrin chaired the Pardons Board meeting last Tuesday during which a total of 12 appeals were presented for consideration.

"After considering the Malaysian Prisons Department report, the Attorney-General’s views and comments of the board members, the Sultan was satisfied that the punishment which the two prisoners endured had taught them useful lessons to mend their ways " he told a press conference here, today.

Sultan Nazrin said that a sentence was imposed with the intention to teach the community to uphold the country's laws.

He said Sultan Nazrin also said that a pardon or mitigation of a sentence decided by the court would only be considered when the prisoner has shown remorse and regretted committing the offence after apologising, behaving well while in custody and showing determination to start a new life.

Meanwhile, Orang Kaya Bendahara Seri Maharaja Tan Sri Zahidi Zainuddin said in conjunction with the ruler’s birthday celebration tomorrow, recitation of surah Yassin and prayers will be held at mosques and surau throughout the state led by the Orang Besar Jajahan and district officials.
