Trailer lorry laden with cement overturns, killing three family members in Gopeng

IPOH,  Nov 3  -- Three members of a family were killed when a trailer lorry laden with cement they were travelling in skidded off the road and overturned at  Jalan Lama  Kota Bharu, Gopeng, near here last night.

A spokesperson from the Perak Fire and Rescue Department said the department received a distress call at 10.28 pm, following which a team from the Gopeng and Kampar Fire and Rescue Stations was sent to the scene.

“When the firemen arrived, they found three people trapped in the trailer, namely a 30-year-old adult male and two boys, aged eight and six," he said in a statement here today.

He said the firemen had problems to remove the victims from the overturned trailer lorry and had to use bulldozers and excavators to get them out.

The operation, assisted by the police, Health Ministry and Tenaga Nasional Berhad, ended at  2.19 am today and the victims were sent to the Kampar Hospital.

It is learnt that the boys were the trailer driver’s sons and they were heading to Langkap from Gopeng.

Meanwhile, Kampar district police chief Supt Hasron Nazri Hashim identified the victims in the crash as trailer lorry driver, Hafize Nizam Ali Supian, 30, and his two sons, nine-year-old Muhammad Afeef Rafiqie and six-year-old Arrian Nuh.

He said the crash occurred about 10.30 pm, while Hafize Nizam, from Langkap, Teluk Intan, was on the way from Kota Bharu, Gopeng, to Malim Nawar, after picking up the cement consignment at a factory for delivery to Melaka.

"On arrival at the scene, the trailer lorry skidded at a bend on the left side of the road and crashed into an electric pole and the road divider.

“All the victims died on the spot and the rescue team took about five hours to remove the bodies from the trailer lorry,” he said when met at the Forensic Unit of the Kampar Hospital.

He said the post mortem conducted on the victims found they died due to polytrauma secondary to road traffic accident.
