SIBU, Nov 2 -- The mother of constable Nicolester Dadup Unggat, who died chasing two suspects in a car in Johor Bahru on Sunday, felt an overwhelming sense of apprehension a couple of days before the accident.
According to Elizabeth Salang, 42, three days before the accident, 20-year-old Nicolester sent a WhatsApp message to her saying that he wanted to take leave in December and come home and take some photos with her and his grandfather wearing his graduate police cadet uniform.
“He told me, he would wear his white uniform and take a photo with my father (Salang Kaya) and me, and somehow I felt uneasy,” she told reporters at her home today.
She said she only knew of Nicholester’s death after receiving a call from a policeman where her son was stationed at 8.00 am on Sunday informing her that her eldest son had died in a road crash while chasing two suspects in a car while on patrol.
The deceased’s partner, lance corporal Mohammad Fadhirul Musa, 32, was seriously injured in the incident where their patrol car overturned while chasing two suspects in a Perodua Myvi at Jalan Kangkar Tebrau – Jalan Tun Teja Johor Bahru early in the morning on that day.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s grandfather, Salang Kaya, 76, said his grandson was always interested in an army or police career since young. He managed to join the police and underwent training in Kuching in November 2019, completing it in May this year.
He said Nicolester and his three other siblings had been taken care of since young following their parents divorce.
“Immediately after he finished his training, he was posted to Johor and when during our daily conversations, I would ask about his day. The evening before the incident, I called him and he told me he was on patrol duty from 12 am till 8 am the next day.
“I advised him to be careful and to keep safe,” he said.
Nicolester will be accorded an official police funeral at the Nirvana Memorial Park cemetery, on Thursday morning.
