SERI KEMBANGAN, Oct 20 -- A social media celebrity has been detained for allegedly selling counterfeit versions of branded perfume in a raid at a condominium in Taman Pinggiran Putra here today.
Selangor Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) director Muhammad Zikril Azan Abdullah said more than 1,000 perfume bottles estimated to be worth RM150,000 were seized during the raid at 3 pm.
"A preliminary investigation found that the perfumes were being sold for as low as RM150 to RM200, with thousands of ringgit in profits made every month. The victims (buyers) were told that the product was genuine,” he said when met at the location here today.
He added the 26-year-old woman who was also assisted by her husband, had been operating from the unit for about a year, and marketed the goods through Instagram and Facebook.
During the raid, the team also found the shipment delivery slips, packaging boxes and banking transaction receipts, he said, adding that the products were purchased by locals and those from neighbouring countries.
Muhammad Zikril said the woman was released on police bail and would be called to testify soon, with the case being investigated under Section 102 (1) (b) of the Trademarks Act 2019.
