Countering fake news on social media, Oct 9 - KKMM

09/10/2020 06:39 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 -- The following is an update from the Communications and Multimedia Ministry (KKMM) Quick Response Team on countering fake news on social media.

  1. Penang North East District Police Chief has denied a message that has gone viral on social media claiming police were conducting roadblocks and road closures involving four main roads around the Penang Remand Prison and Jalan Penajara in George Town following COVID-19 cases from the Remand Prison Cluster. He said no roads were closed or roadblocks implemented around the area at this time and urged the public to stop spreading unverified information.
  2. The District Officer of Semporna, Sabah has denied viral news which claimed that the Movement Control Order (MCO) or ‘lockdown’ has been enforced in Kampung Bangau-Bangau, Semporna following the Bangau-Bangau Cluster which involves almost all residents of the village. Instead, he said the village was only placed under the administrative Targeted Enhanced Movement Control Order (TEMCO). He advised the public not to spread fake information that could create panic.
