Community internet centres help small entrepreneur expand online businesses - MCMC

CYBERJAYA, Sept 25 -- The Community Internet Centres (PIK) have helped small entrepreneurs, especially those in rural areas, increase their income and expand their online business.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in a statement today said with the various training and programmes provided at Teluk Rimba PIK in Muar, Johor for example, entrepreneurs who have started on a small scale were now promoting their products, such as mini curry puffs and otak-otak, to bigger markets including overseas. 

With trainings provided for travel agents and small-time food traders at Taman Desa Permai PIK in Marang, Terengganu, more job opportunities are now available for the local community, the statement said.

In Yan, Kedah, small entrepreneurs who produce spices, pastes, scarves and pickled food as well as home stay operators and those providing paragliding sports adventure for tourists too have benefited from the courses conducted at Kampung Titi Teras PIK.

In Sabah it said, the Kiulu PIK has helped small entrepreneurs to promote their aquaponics and tourism products including home stay accommodation as well as recreational activities such as rafting.

Earlier the MCMC announced that it was empowering 1,064 community internet centres nationwide to become digital transformation centres for local communities.

The focus is not only for the centres to generate new job opportunities but also to enable youth to have access to knowledge and ample opportunities to create innovations and new ideas in the digital economy era, it added.
