15/08/2020 07:07 PM

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 15  -- The Penang government has launched the Penang Bay International Ideas Competition today and it is now open for submission to all.

The Penang Bay Ideas Competition is run by the George Town Conservation and Development Corporation (GTCDC), a partnership between the state government and Think City, along with the other partners, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP).

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the competition would serve as a gateway for untapped potentials by creating a New Economic Zone in Penang, in line with the Penang2030 vision and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

"The ideas competition ensures that, as we build Penang Bay together, we address some of the biggest challenges that cities face today.

"It is an invitation to the most innovative minds from Malaysia and around the world to help us find solutions and meet the needs and expectations of the people of Penang," he said in his speech for the launching ceremony here.

Meanwhile, at a press conference, Think City managing director Hamdan Abdul Majeed said the participants could send in their submissions online at https://penangbaycompetition.com.my/ between Aug 15 and Oct 19.

He said the submissions could be in the form of a sketch of not more than three A1 panels or in a 2.5 minute long video format.

"The selected top three winners with five more shortlisted participants will receive cash awards (in US dollars)," he said.

According to him, the top three winners would receive USD20,000, USD8,000 and USD4,000, respectively, whereas the five shortlisted participants would receive USD1,000 each.

He added that the ideas competition was previously scheduled to be launched in March this year, but was delayed due to COVID-19.
