KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 -- Local entrepreneurs have been asked to register for a copyright with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) to prevent plagiarism.
Its chairman Datuk Mohamad Alamin said the awareness of importance of intellectual property registration was still lacking among the group since it had not been made a mandatory.
“Only by registering with MyIPO, their works will be protected, don’t wait until it’s too late...take all the necessary steps before marketing a product to ensure safe and competitive business operations.
“Legal action can still be taken against those found to have copied others’ works even if no copyright has registered yet...we may have to provide counselling services for those facing such issues,” he said during a media briefing on COVID-19 Impacts on MyIPO Registration here today.
Meanwhile, Mohamad said from January to May this year, MyIPO had approved 12,917 registrations for intellectual properties including 10,768 trademarks, 1,825 (patterns), 317 (industrial designs) and seven geographical indicators.
