Celebrate Aidilfitri in the new normal - MHC

21/05/2020 04:44 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 -- With Aidilfitri in just a few days, the Malaysian Health Coalition (MHC) is urging that the public celebrate it with the new normal.

In a statement issued today, the MHC  said the traditions of travelling back to the hometown, open houses and visiting have to be sacrificed while constantly observing social distancing.

At the same time, the MHC is urging the public to celebrate with only the members of their households, to take precautions if they want to perform the congregational prayers at the mosque and to support their communities.

“We must maintain social distancing to protect the elderly and those with health issues. Avoid the practice of ‘bersalaman’ (customary handshake) to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus in the country.

“Malaysians are urged to continue taking preventive measures when carrying out their religious obligations so as to protect everyone’s health. It is just as meaningful to perform the religious obligations at home during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period,” it said.

The MHC also urged members of the public to continue supporting each other and foster the muhibbah spirit.

”We hope that the Aidilfitri celebration this year is more meaningful for all Malaysians. Have small and private gatherings, continue the new practices by observing social distancing, cleaning the hands and staying at home,” it said, adding that the practice of giving charity was not confined only to the month of Ramadan.
