COVID-19: Three UMK's innovative products receive MOSTI grant

BACHOK, April 16  -- Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) has received a RM150,000 grant from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) through the Malaysia Innovation Foundation for its three innovative products that are produced to help combat the COVID-19 outbreak.

Its vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Noor Azizi Ismail said UMK has also become the first public university to receive the Model Community Enabler (HIP6) grant from MOSTI for successfully producing face shields, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) suit and intubation box.

“UMK has produced the three products for use by medical frontliners in battling the spread of COVID-19.

“Although UMK is not a technology-based university, we tried to leverage the internal expertise with the hope that this small effort of ours can help the community,” he told Bernama here today.

Noor Azizi also praised the UMK Research Management and Innovation Centre for successfully producing the products even in a short period of time.

“The products are also produced by leveraging technology and expertise from UMK’s Faculty of Creative Technology and Heritage as well as its Office of Library and Knowledge Management,” he said.

Noor Azizi said prior to receiving the grant, UMK had also approved a special allocation for the purpose of producing the innovative products.

He also expressed thanks to the managemnt of the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital  and the Kelantan Red Crescent Society for providing inputs during the process of producing the products.

Noor Azizi said the products have also been distributed for free to medical facilities in the state adding that there were also plans to distribute them to Terengganu and Pahang in the near future.
