UMK develops smart tracking apps in monitoring COVID-19 chain reaction

01/04/2020 08:31 PM

PENGKALAN CHEPA, April 1 --  Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) has developed a smart tracking application in efforts to improve communication, surveillance and monitoring of its 10,972 staff and student members, for risks of potential COVID-19 infection.

UMK’s Centre for Computing and Informatics (CCI) director Wan Azlee Wan Abdullah said the smartphone-based (Android and iOS) and Web (Dashboard) applications were developed by the university’s top management through the CCI, in collaboration with the University’s Health Centre, Student Affairs and Alumni Office and Registration Office.

“We leveraged on UMK's internal resources and expertise to develop the application and the system will be put into operation from today," he said when contacted today.

Wan Azlee said through the smart tracking device, UMK would be able to track the location of its staff and students based on GPS coordinates as well as their health status, according to the COVID-19 pandemic chain reaction (Category A-E), throughout the duration of the Movement Control Order (MCO).

This health status is categorised by the chain of infection with Category A as positively identified, Category B (close contact of category A individuals), Category C (close contact of category B individuals), Category D (close contact of category C individuals) and Category E (not related to category A, B, C, or D).

Anyone encountering problems or having symptoms of COVID 19 infection could immediately notify the university before they are referred to the nearest hospital.

Wan Azlee added that the CCI had also introduced the software to Apps Store and Play Store platforms. However the software verification process by Apple and Google for listing in the respective stores, would take some time.

As a temporary measure Wan Azlee advised staff and students to install the APK file through the UMK server (for android users), while Apple smartphone users could access the url file via https://smarttracking.umk.edu.my/.
