NILAI, March 25 -- To assist the government in the fight against the COVID-19 outbreak, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) has taken the initiative to produce face shields for distribution to healthcare workers.
USIM Strategic Communication Centre in a statement today said for a start they have developed 40 units, 22 of which have been distributed to Ampang Hospital in Kuala Lumpur and Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital in Seremban.
The project initiated by a group of lecturers from the Faculty of Science and Technology led by Dr Mohd Ifwat Mohd Ghazali was to help overcome the shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) in some hospitals.
"Aware of the problems faced by healthcare workers we felt it is our responsibility to give a helping hand and to support hospital frontliners,” the statement said.
“Five 3D printing machines are being utilised for the project,” it said adding that each machine could produce between five and 10 units a day and the materials needed were 3D filaments, A4 transparent sheets, foam padding, glue, stickers and elastic rubber.
“Other hospitals and health clinics have expressed interest in our product and USIM will try to meet the requests,” the statement added.
