KOTA KINABALU, March 9 -- Kota Marudu member of Parliament and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) president Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili is back in the federal cabinet after being appointed Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak Affairs) as announced by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today.
Maximus, 66, is no stranger to the federal cabinet, having previously been a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department from 2004 to 2008; Science, Technology and Innovation Minister (2008-2013); and Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister (2013-2018).
Born in Kota Kinabalu on Oct 26 1953 and hailing from Kampung Karanaan, Tambunan, he began his career as an elected representative after winning the Langkok state seat in the 1994 Sabah Election and was appointed Assistant Minister to the Sabah Chief Minister.
Maximus, who has been Kota Marudu’s MP since 1995, first joined the federal cabinet in 2004 when he was appointed Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.
He studied at Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Pekan Tambunan (1962-1966) and St Martin Secondary School, Tambunan (1967-1971) before transferring to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Keningau in 1972. He left for Australia to further his education at La Trobe University, where he graduated with a degree in Agriculture in 1980.
He then served as a tutor and part-time lecturer at the university until he completed his Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Economics in 1985.
