SANDAKAN, Feb 14 -- The construction of a secondary school on Pulau Tanjung Aru here should be hastened to ensure the safety of students from the island who have to travel via boat daily to reach school in Sandakan town.
Sukau assemblyman Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman said this was following a boat collision in the waters off Sandakan yesterday which involved students from the island.
“I hope the request can be included in the 12th Malaysian Plan,” he told reporters after presenting financial aid to the victims of the incident here today.
Saddi also proposed that a dormitory be built in Sandakan town for students from Pulau Tanjung Aru to avoid such unfortunate incident from recurring, pending construction of the secondary school.
Currently, Pulau Tanjung Aru has only one primary school and a pre-school.
In the accident at about 6 am, a passenger boat with 37 on board, including students, was involved in a crash with a boat being towed by a ship, leaving 14 people injured.
General Operations Force (GOF) personnel Asman Ongkal, 40, has been reported missing in the incident.
