KOTA BHARU, Feb 10 -- The Kelantan government is ready to cooperate with the Ministry of Education (MOE) to enhance the Islamic education system in the country.
Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob said the state government would be open if the Federal Government through the MOE, wished to adopt the education system or syllabus implemented by the state government at religious schools in the state.
"The Islamic education system taught in schools is comprehensive in terms of worldly affairs and those of the hereafter, to create a balanced society.
"Islamic education covers various fields of study such as economics, geography, mathematics, but only requires some emphasis, facilities, and assistance to religious schools," he told reporters after the new year's address to 'penghulus' or village chiefs at the Pusat Tarbiah Islamiah Kelantan (Putik) Hall in Pengkalan Chepa here, today.
The media had previously reported Prime Minister Tun Dr Mathathir Mohammad, who is also acting Education Minister as saying that there were many things to be improved in the ministry, including the study of Islam.
In an interview posted on the YouTube channel 'Tha Malaya Post', Dr Mahathir said Islamic education in Malaysian schools was too focused on the afterlife.
