17/04/2026 05:55 PM

LABUAN, April 17 (Bernama) -- The Labuan Port Authority (LPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all communication and surveillance equipment within its jurisdiction on the duty-free island complies with standards set by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

Its general manager, Mizool Amir Mat Drus said the commitment was reached following a coordination meeting involving the authority, local enforcement agencies, jetty operators and representatives from MCMC, aimed at standardising marine communication systems across all port users at Megah Port Management here today

“The standardisation is crucial to avoid discrepancies in marine communication channels among port users, which could affect operational efficiency and safety in Labuan waters,” he said to Bernama.

He said the LPA would take proactive measures to ensure that all communication and surveillance systems are aligned with MCMC requirements, while enhancing awareness among the port community.

“To this end, we plan to organise workshops and special engagement sessions with MCMC so that the Labuan port community is continuously exposed to the latest information, in line with international standards,” he said.

Mizool also said in efforts to strengthen monitoring capabilities, the LPA is also looking to upgrade existing communication and surveillance infrastructure, including the installation of radar systems that meet MCMC specifications.
