KUALA LUMPUR, March 2 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) detained 49 individuals, including three Indonesian skippers, in a special integrated operation, codenamed 'Op Pintas' in the waters off Sabak Bernam, Selangor, early this morning.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk M. Kumar said that in the operation conducted at about 2 am, the CID D3 Division, in collaboration with several other teams, conducted a raid at a location three nautical miles from the waters in question.
He said the arrests involved three Indonesian men believed to be the smugglers, aged between 42 and 45 years old, as well as 46 Indonesian migrants, comprising 26 men and 20 women, aged between 25 and 40 years.
"Preliminary investigations found that all the migrants were on their way to Tanjung Balai, Indonesia, from the shores of Sabak Bernam using a 'Pom-Pom' type boat."
"The fee charged for each migrant was around RM1,500 to RM2,000 per person, paid in cash to the transporter," he said in a statement today.
He also said all those arrested were brought to the Sabak Bernam district police headquarters (IPD) for further investigation under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act (ATIPSOM) 2007 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
"The public is urged to channel any crime-related information to the nearest police station,” he added.
