KUCHING, Oct 10 (Bernama) -- Sarawak’s crime rate has dropped by 10 per cent from January to September this year compared to the same period last year, Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said.
He reported that 3,558 crimes were recorded up to September, down from 3,965 cases last year. The case resolution rate also doubled, thanks to effective crime prevention and investigation by the Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ).
"For violent crimes, 463 cases were recorded, down from 480 last year, showing a four per cent decrease, with a 98 per cent resolution rate.
“Rape cases rose by seven to 123 this year, while unarmed robbery cases increased by six to 48 cases," he said at the Sarawak Police Commissioner’s Monthly Assembly at the state police headquarters today.
He also noted that property crimes fell by 11 per cent to 3,095 cases, compared to 3,485 cases last year. However, vehicle thefts increased by 24 per cent, with 214 cases recorded this year.
To strengthen relationships with the public, he added that the Sarawak JSJ has launched official social media accounts on TikTok and Facebook under the name ‘CID_Sarawak Official’ to share safety tips and engage with younger audiences.
"Through these platforms, we will highlight JSJ’s achievements and help restore public trust in the police by ensuring all reports are thoroughly investigated," he said, adding that the public can also report crimes via the JSJ hotline at 013-5253052.
Meanwhile, Mohamad Zainal shared that the Sarawak Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (JSJN) made 8,540 drug-related arrests from January to September, a 1.6 per cent increase from last year.
"Drugs worth RM28.4 million were seized, up 13 per cent from RM25.1 million last year. JSJN also confiscated assets worth RM12.4 million, compared to RM1.1 million last year," he added.
Commercial crimes also saw a rise of 60.7 per cent, reaching 3,016 cases, with most involving online scams such as fake investments, e-commerce fraud, and non-existent loan schemes.
He advised the public to stay cautious and use official channels like the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997 or the Check Scammers CCID app before making transactions.
