LABUAN, Oct 9 (Bernama) -- A fishing trip turned tragic late Wednesday night (Oct 8) when one man died and two others were found unconscious after being hit by strong waves at Pohon Batu Beach here.

The incident occurred at about 11.10 pm when the trio — identified as Zain Iden, 50, Isa Iden and Untung Jurung, both 53, were believed to have been fishing near the shore during rough sea conditions.

Labuan Fire and Rescue Department director Abdul Rahman Ali said a distress call was received at 11.11 pm, and a rescue team from the Layangan Fire Station, located about 3.5 kilometres away, was immediately dispatched to the scene.

“Upon arrival, our operations team found two victims unconscious, while another was weak but responsive,” he said when contacted by Bernama today.

Abdul Rahman said Zain Iden was confirmed dead by medical personnel at the scene, while the other two men were taken to Labuan Hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.

He also advised the public to avoid fishing or engaging in coastal activities during strong winds and rough sea conditions, especially at night.
