KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- Two men were arrested to facilitate investigations into an incident involving an effigy bearing the likeness of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that was brought to a rally in Dataran Merdeka on Saturday and subsequently whipped.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the men, 21 and 47, were arrested separately and communication equipment believed to have been used to upload and send information about the incident was seized.

“The act was recorded and uploaded on social media by certain parties and the remand application for both individuals will be made (soon),” he said in a statement today.

The case is being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 by the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department D5 Division’s Classified Crimes Investigation Unit, he added.

Mohd Khalid also advised the public not to use social media as a tool to sow discord and affect public order negatively, as stern action would be taken against those who did so.
