Suspected Snatch Thief Beaten To Death

KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 (Bernama) -- A man believed to be a foreigner was confirmed dead after being beaten by members of the public while attempting to rob a female kindergarten teacher in a residential area near Batu 9, Cheras on Tuesday.

Kajang district police chief ACP Naazron Abdul Yusof said his department received an emergency call from the public regarding the incident at 11.10 am.

"Members from the Batu 9 Cheras Police Station rushed to the location and found a man lying injured and unconscious," he said in a statement today.

According to him, an examination by the medical team that arrived at the location shortly afterwards confirmed that the suspect had died, believed to have been beaten by members of the public.

"The robbery suspect who was approximately 160 centimetres tall, wore a black T-shirt and a pair of black shorts and did not have any identification documents," he said.

Naazron said a post-mortem was conducted on the same day classified the cause of death as “Pending Laboratory Analysis” by a Pathologist.

Following the incident, police arrested eight local men aged between 22 and 72 at 7.46 pm on the day of the incident, to assist in the investigation.

“All individuals have been remanded for six days from July 23 to 28. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment for between 30 and 40 years and if not sentenced to death, can be given not less than 12 strokes,” he said.
