KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 (Bernama) – A foreign worker, believed to be a drug trafficker, was arrested with 20.85 kilograms of methamphetamine, estimated to be worth RM80,000, in a shopping mall area in Taman Melawati, Ampang, last Saturday.
Ampang Jaya District Police Chief ACP Mohd Azam Ismail said that the 50-year-old man was detained while walking in the area at 12:35 pm, carrying a bag containing 20 transparent plastic packets of the drugs.
"Initial investigations revealed that the suspect had been residing in the country for approximately 10 years, and an urine test showed he was positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine. However, he has no prior criminal record.
"The seized drugs are believed to be sufficient to supply approximately 20,850 addicts in the Klang Valley area," he said in a statement here today.
Mohd Azam added that the suspect would be remanded for seven days until this Sunday to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
If convicted, he could face the death penalty or life imprisonment and no less than 12 strokes of the cane.
