SANDAKAN, April 23 (Bernama) -- The Sabah state government is expected to launch the Sabah Agriculture Blueprint in May.

State Agriculture Department director Datuk Idrus Shafie said the blueprint was needed to develop Sabah’s agriculture sector in a comprehensive manner.

He said the blueprint would include the planting of corn, coffee, rice, fruits and vegetables, as well as the breeding of stingless honey bees.

“For a long time, the state government (through the Sabah Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry) has intended to create a plan as a reference point to develop (the state’s) agriculture in a comprehensive way.

“Currently, there are regional (development) plans, such the Southern Region Development Plan and the East Region Development Plan, that are used as references to make this blueprint a success,” he told reporters after the opening ceremony of the Sabah Agriculture Department’s annual meeting here today.

The ceremony was officiated by State Deputy Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Dr Daud Yusof.

Meanwhile, Daud said the state’s agriculture department needs more staff in its enforcement division to monitor and implement quarantine on agriculture products and plants entering the state.

He said the Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry have more than 1,000 vacancies and most of these are for the Agriculture Department’s enforcement unit, as well as other agencies under the ministry.
