Mainstream Media Crucial For Boosting SME Branding

29/05/2025 07:18 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 (Bernama) -- Mainstream media must continue to stay relevant and play a key role in strengthening the branding of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), said MK Curtain founder, Datuk Dr Calvin Khiu.

He said that despite the growing influence of social media, mainstream media, such as the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), remains a trusted and authoritative platform for delivering authentic, high-impact information to the community and industry players.

“Conventional media, meaning mainstream media, still play a crucial role in building brand identity. These days, with so much unauthentic information circulating on social media, it’s often hard to tell what’s true and what’s not.

“Bernama is a highly trustworthy platform. Ten years ago, I appeared on Bernama TV for a business interview, and I believe it remains one of the best platforms for SMEs, or any company, to leverage mainstream media to strengthen their brand,” he said.

He said this after a meeting with Bernama Chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, and Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj at Wisma Bernama, here, today.

Commenting further, Khiu said that the role of the media in raising public awareness about the importance of branding has yet to be fully leveraged by most SMEs.

“Many SMEs don’t fully understand how to make effective use of mainstream media platforms. That’s why more educational and information-sharing sessions are needed. Bernama is a professional and reliable channel for that,” he said.

In conjunction with the celebration of National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2025, today, Khiu also reaffirmed MK Curtain’s commitment to supporting journalists and the media industry in Malaysia.

“We are proud to be supporters of HAWANA. The media plays a vital role for SMEs. Without strong and consistent media coverage, many entrepreneurs may not realise how to fully leverage platforms like Bernama,” he said.
