TUMPAT, Jan 6 (Bernama) -- A total of 43 students from Universiti Malaya (UM) Bachok campus in collaboration with 70 personnel of the 7th Battalion of General Operations Force (GOF7) helped residents of Kampung Kubang Sawa to clean up the village mosque after the recent floods.

Lecturer and academic coordinator of Universiti Malaya Bachok campus, Noordina Aziz said the flood mission was implemented as an exposure for university students to experience the tailend of a disaster.

Noordina said the programme was to help residents of low-lying areas recover from the natural disaster.

“This flood mission is the first to be implemented by UM after the flood, coming a long way from the inaugural programme held in Kampung Bakong in 2018.

“Fortunately, this time our mission also collaborated with 70 GOF7 members and this deepened the lessons of the programme,” Noordina said at Masjid Ittihadi Mukim Kubang Sawa here today.

Also present were the Commanding Officer Supt Azhari Nusi of GOF7, the Grand Imam of Masjid Ittihadi, Muhamad Saidi Yunus and head of Mukim Bendang Pak Yong, Mohd Azmi Ibrahim.

Commenting further, Noordina said in addition to cleaning up the mosque, the student mission also delivered food aid to 150 families and clean the homes of elderly people who were helpless.

Meanwhile, a 5th Year Human Resource Management student, Muhamad Hanafi Mohd Termizi, 21, said he was very excited to join the flood mission.

“I am from Sabah and have never entered the village here and I was aghast to learn that the depth of the flood waters was way over my head.

“If I have the chance again, I will not miss the opportunity to participate in a relief mission like this because there is a lot of experience to be gained,” he said.
